Statement of Faith

Here is the statement of faith for Calvary Baptist Church. Please take the time to look up the Bible references. It matters what a church teaches and believes. Everything taught and believed needs to be from what God says and not what man says.

Beneath each point of the statement of faith are one or more sermons in mp3 format given by Pastor Lionel Smith teaching about that point.

  1. THE BIBLE - It is the verbally inspired Word of God; it is Truth without error; and it is the only and final revelation of God to man. The King James Bible is the inerrant Word of God in the English language.

    The Holy Spirit 2

  11. THE DEVIL - He once enjoyed heavenly honours but through pride and ambition to be as the Almighty, fell from his position; he is the arch enemy of God, the father of lies, the tempter, the author of false religions, the unholy god of this world system.

  16. Rom. 3:10-13; 5.12; Gal. 3:22
    The Fall of Man

  17. THE ATONEMENT OF SIN - Only God could make atonement and forgive sin; thus Jesus took upon Himself our sins and died for them upon the cross; He paid the full penalty demanded by justice so that we might be freely forgiven.

  19. THE SALVATION OF SINNERS - God grants the free gift of salvation to all who truly repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ; it is apart from works, religions, education, parents and philosophy; that nothing prevents sinners from being saved except their rejection of God’s only way.

  21. THE SECURITY OF THE BELIEVER - A person is eternally secure in Christ from the moment of salvation; the believers standing before God is perfect and changeless; and that keeping power is based on the finished work of Christ.

    The security of the Believer

  23. THE TWO NATURES OF THE BELIEVER - Every saved person has two natures, the old and the new; the old nature is the flesh and the new nature is the Spirit; the first is sinful and the latter is perfect; and that claims to eradication of sin in the old nature in this life is unscriptural.

  24. Gal. 5:16-26; Eph. 4:22-24; Rom. 6:13
The two natures of the believer

  25. THE BELIEVERS LIFE - He is to live according to the Word of God at any cost; he is to deny ungodliness and worldly lust and to live soberly, righteously and godly; thus a life that glorifies God in word and deed and points others to Christ.

  26. Titus 2:11-12; Rom. 12:1,2; Matt. 5:14-16
    The Believer's Life

  27. THE ORDINANCES - The ordinances are two, namely, baptism and the Lord’s Supper. They speak of Christ and the believers relationship to Him. In the act of baptism (meaning immersion) the believer identifies himself with the burial and resurrection of Christ and thus declares his faith in the finished work of the Gospel. In the act of the Lord's Supper, the believer shows forth the death and coming again of Christ; this must be accompanied by self examination.

  29. THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH - This is an organized assembly of baptized believers associated by a covenant of faith whose only authority in faith and practice is the Word of God; it is to be actively engaged in preaching the Gospel and sending missionaries; observing the Scriptural ordinances; teaching believers how to live and providing fellowship; the church is to be self-governing and free from denominational or political control.

  31. ESCHATOLOGY (THE LAST THINGS) - We believe the Scriptures teach that the next event on God’s prophetic calendar will be the imminent return of Christ and the rapture of all church-age believers. Immediately following this will be the Judgment Seat of Christ in Heaven where believers will be judged to determine the granting or losing of rewards for service while on earth after they were saved. Following this will be the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. During this time of Heavenly activities, there will be on the earth the seven years duration of the Great Tribulation. This will mark God’s dealings with Israel as a nation and also with unregenerate mankind who have refused Jesus through the personages of the Anti-Christ, the beast, and the false prophet. Although the Holy Spirit is in the world during this time, His restraining power has been removed. It is also during this seven year period on earth that the Anti-Christ, beast, and false prophet will have their rise and destruction.
  32. All of this will be consummated at the Battle of Armageddon which will take place at Christ’s Revelation, when He returns with His Bride to set up His millennial reign. Christ will then rule for a thousand years with a rod of iron during which time there will be peace, prosperity, and removal of the curse on the earth. Also during this time Satan will be bound for the 1,000 years in the bottomless pit, after which he will be loosed for a little season to gather to himself all of the apostates of the world, to do battle against the Lord for the last time. Satan and his host will be defeated and cast into the lake of fire. Following this will be the resurrection of the unrighteous dead and a judgment on the basis of their works. All will be cast into the lake of fire. Following this will be the creation of the new heavens and the new earth.

  33. THE FREENESS OF SALVATION - We believe that the blessings, of salvation are made free to all by the Gospel; that it is the immediate duty of all to accept them by a cordial, penitent, and obedient faith; and that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner on earth but his own inherent depravity and voluntary rejection of the Gospel, which rejection involves him in an aggravated condemnation.
